Resumes do’s and don’ts
Do
- Use white or light beige colored paper.
- Make sure that there are no grammatical mistakes.
- Leave plenty of white space.
- Use appropriate headings, and bold face them.
- Make it easy to find your titles and dates of employment.
- Justify the page to make it look even. Make sure the font is professional and easy to
read.
- Try to keep the resume to one page. For more experienced applicants, a second page
is acceptable.
- Put all relevant information on the resume, including names of companies you have
worked for, dates of employment, your job title, your duties and accomplishments.
- When summarizing educational experience, be sure to write your college name(s),
dates of attendance, degree received, minors and majors, and any honors or awards achieved.
- List any courses you have taken, and any computer skills you may have.
Don’t
- Don’t leave any spelling mistakes. Use your spellcheck.
- Don’t write the resume with a pen or pencil. You should use a computer. If you don’t
have one available go to a printing shop or ask a friend.
- Don’t list duties, responsibilities and achievements all together in an unorganized
manner. List them clearly, including company and position information.
- Don’t put fancy borders, background pictures or shading.
